1. WHO ARE NRNS ?
“Non-resident Nepali” means a foreign citizen of Nepalese origin and this term also includes a Nepalese citizen residing abroad. “Foreign citizen of Nepalese origin” means a person who him/herself or whose father, mother grandfather or grandmother was a citizen of Nepal at any time and has subsequently acquired the citizenship of any other foreign country other than a member country of the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC). “Nepali citizen residing abroad” means a Nepali citizen who has been residing in any foreign country for at least two years engaged in any profession, occupation, business and employment except a Nepalese citizen residing in a member country of SAARC or serving in a diplomatic mission or consulate situated in a foreign country under the assignment of the Government of Nepal and pursuing studies in an academic institution in a foreign country. Family members of NRN can also register as NRN and obtain their ID cards.
2. WHY HAS THE GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZED THEM AND SOUGHT THEIR PARTICIPATION?
The affairs of NRNs are governed by Non-Resident Nepali Act, 2008 and Non-Resident Nepali Rules, 2009. The government has recognized NRNs and sought their participation for the following reasons:
- To motivate Non-Resident Nepalese to take part in all round advancement of Nepal and enhance their attachment towards Nepal; and
- To encourage their investment in Nepal.
3. FACILITIES EXTENDED TO NRNS BY THE GOVERNMENT OF NEPAL:
The government of Nepal has extended, among others, the following facilities to NRNs:
- Issuance of Identity Card upon their application with necessary documents and fees
- Right to open an account in convertible foreign currency
- Investment can be made in convertible foreign currency
- Repatriation of investment and profit earned out of investment
- Right to run an industry or business
- Purchase of land for residential purpose
4. APPLICATIONS FOR ID CARDS
NRNs can apply either to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu or to the Nepalese Embassies abroad for NRN ID Cards. The applicants need to fill up the forms as stated in Schedule 1 of NRN Rules, 2009 and should pay the following fees:
- Application Fee for all NRNs: AED 80/-
- The ID card fee for NRNs, who are foreign citizens of Nepalese origin, is AED 940/- For Nepalese citizen residing abroad except SAARC countries, the fee is AED190/-
- The validity of the NRN ID card issued to foreign citizens of Nepalese origin shall be ten years from the date of issuance.
- The validity of NRN ID card issued to Nepalese citizen residing abroad shall be two years.
- In Nepal, these fees can be paid in Nepalese rupees at the prevalent exchange rate of the day of application.

४. नेपालको नागरिकता परित्याग गरेको भए सो नागरिकता परित्याग गरेको प्रमाण ।
५. बाबु/आमा/बाजे/बज्यैको नागरिकताको प्रमाणपत्र नं., जिल्ला वा निज नेपालको नागरिक भएको व्यहोरा खुल्ने कागजात ।
६. बसोबास गरिरहेको मुलुकमा कुनै पेशा वा व्यवसाय गरी बसेको भए सो व्यवसाय दर्ता सम्बन्धी कागजात ।
७. बसोबास गरिरहेको मुलुकमा रोजगारी गरी बसेको भए सो पुष्टि गर्ने कागजात ।
८. हालसालै खिचिएको पासपोर्ट साइजको एक प्रति फोटो । (निवेदन फारामको लागि)
९. हालसालै खिचिएको अटो साइज (२५ मिमि x ३० मिमि) को फोटो तिन प्रति । (परिचयपत्रको लागि)
१०. राजस्व शुल्कः दि. २०००/-
ख) विदेशमा बस्ने नेपालीका लागि
संलग्न गर्नपर्ने आबश्यक कागजात

३. नेपाली राहदानीको सक्कल र प्रतिलिपि ।

५. विदेशमा पेशा वा रोजगारी गरी बसेको भए सो पुष्टि गर्ने कागजात ।
६. कुनै अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय संघ संस्थामा कार्यरत रहेको भए सो संस्थाको नियुक्तिपत्र तथा हाल कार्यरत रहेको भन्ने व्यहोरा खुल्ने कागजात ।
७. हालसालै खिचिएको पासपोर्ट साइजको एक प्रति फोटो । (निवेदन फारामको लागि)
८. हालसालै खिचिएको अटो साइज (२५ मिमि x ३० मिमि) को फोटो तिन प्रति । (परिचयपत्रको लागि)

A) FOREIGN NATIONALS OF NEPALESE ORIGIN
Required Documents:
- A duly filled in application form
- National Identity Card of the country of current nationality and its copy
- Passport of the current country of current nationality and its copy
- Copy of previous Nepali Passport / Citizenship certificate as a proof of Nepalese Origin
- Copy of Citizenship Certificate of father/mother/grandfather/grandmother or any other document that proves their Nepalese nationality
- Document/proof of any profession or business in the country of current nationality
- Document/proof of employment in the country of current nationality
- A recent passport size photograph (for the application form)
- Three recent auto size (25mmX30mm) photographs (for the identity card)
- Revenue Fees of AED 2000/-
B) NEPALESE NATIONALS CURRENTLY LIVING ABROAD
Required Documents:
- A duly filled in application form
- Nepalese Citizenship Certificate and its copy
- Nepalese Passport and its copy
- Documents related to business in the current country of residence
- Document/proof of employment in the current country of residence
- A recent passport size photograph (for the application form)
- Three recent auto size (25mmX30mm) photographs (for the identity card)
- Revenue Fees of AED 270
